• Condition: This Winchester model 1886, manufactured in 1896, started life with a 24" or 26" full, octagon barrel in caliber .45-90 with button magazine. Obviously a former owner didn't care for that much barrel weight, so they cut the barrel to 20.5" and turned the muzzle end of the barrel round to give the gun the half round/ half octagon look and continue to lighten the gun's overall weight. The stock and forend appear original with a repaired crack on the left side of the wrist. The wear to the forend indicates time balanced across a saddle pommel. The frame and lever still show traces of case color. The loading gate still shows traces of fire blue. The bore is bright with strong lands and grooves, tempered with light frosting. The action has been mounted with a Lymen 56 peep sight. The gun can be used as is, or as a project gun, could be fitted with another octagonal barrel in the caliber of your choice, although .45-90 is hard to improve on.
