Winchester Model 1873 38-40 Special Order 2nd Model Rifle Made 1881
Description: ******* Fall special - Free Shipping!! *******
Winchester Model 1873 2nd model (dust cover rail attached by screws and external trigger pin) special order rifle in 38 WCF with 26" octagon barrel 2" longer than standard and single set trigger. Standard features of full magazine, blued and case hardened finish, plain stocks, and plain trigger. Typical of the early 38 WCF (38-40) rifles, this one has a shotgun butt with smooth steel butt plate as standard issue. Assembly number "1258" matches on left lower tang, upper channel of butt stock, and inner toe of butt plate, so this one is all matching. Cody Museum email sheet that will be provided to the buyer verifies the features and is pictured. This is one of several in this serial range where the factory had to use carbine receivers to assemble rifles as they were out of rifle receivers - note 2 plugged holes on left side where saddle ring would be attached on a carbine.
Except for the lever, trigger, and rear sight elevator, all metal surfaces were professionally refinished at some point. The rifle retains 99% of that expert refinish with no buffing visible. All markings are still sharp. Brass cartridge elevator also remains untouched with some carry wear to the caliber marking. Retains the correct, shorter rear sight. Action is smooth. Half cock safety functions properly, and thankfully, so does the set trigger. Bore is good, a 6 of 10, with typical scattered light black powder pitting but no rings, no bulges, no deep pits or craters, and it still spins a bullet just fine. Stocks are sound with no splits or cracks, still tight and proud, never sanded, exhibiting typical scuffs and dings from 120+ years of use and protected by an added layer of finish. Mag tube is still tight in the dovetail with no wobble. Wish it had been left alone but I can't turn back the clock and undo the refinish, so here it is in its present state. Very nice looking, special order early 38 WCF rifle with provenance.
No international sales. Antique so it can ship to the address of your choice assuming your local laws allow such. Must ship to FFL for NY State buyers. Payment by personal check, bank check or postal money order (sorry no credit cards). 3 day non-firing inspection. Buyer pays return shipping. Packed with care and shipped USPS Mail with tracking.
