SPECIAL ORDER 1886 .40-82
WITH EXTRA LENGTH 28" OCTAGON BARREL, #61XXX, SHIPPED 1891
Description: SPECIAL ORDER 1886 .40-82 CALIBER WITH EXTRA LENGTH 28" OCTAGON BARREL, #61XXX, SHIPPED 1891. This one comes with a Cody Museum Call-In sheet verifying the barrel length etc. Interestingly, this one was received in the warehouse October 7, 1891 but not shipped until August 18, 1892. I assume this was a cancelled order that sat for ten months until the next order for one was received. This rifle is in true "attic condition" having excellent screw heads and shows no cleaning, steel wooling etc. The receiver is an untouched mottled gray/brown. The barrel and magazine show a soft aged and thinning blue mixing heavily with brown with a little more brown on the mag tube. Excellent markings on barrel and upper tang. Wood shows normal light handling marks with tight wood to metal fit. Barrel is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight with small blade front sight. Tight action with strong safety half-cock. Bore shows strong rifling with light scatterred corrosion. According to The Winchester Handbook by Madis, only 478 1886 rifles were made with barrel longer than the standard 26". The .40-82 cartridge was the .45-90 case necked to take .40 caliber bullets and was considered a very powerful round. A scarce almost 134 year old Winchester with attractive appearance.
