Special Order 1873 Winchester Lever Action Rifle 28" Oct Bbl Set Trigger Nickel Trim Full Nickel Receiver / Inscribed Lyman & Tang Sight Research 1886
Description: Special Order Model 1873 Winchester Lever Action Rifle with Extra Long Barrel, Nickel Trim, Full Nickel Receiver, & Set Trigger, .32-20 WCF, mfg. 1886. This is a really neat Winchester with some interesting special features. As confirmed by the included Winchester research the rifle was originally ordered with a 28" octagon barrel, nickel trim, full nickel receiver, and set trigger. Additionally the rifle was inscribed in period with a beautiful “WHI” monogram on the right side of the frame and fitted with a Lyman No. 5 flip-up combination globe front sight and tang peep sight. The barrel and magazine tube have faded to a smooth even plum patina thinning to gray. Nickel plated frame, hammer, trigger, lever, dust cover, buttplate, and forend cap retain approximately 40% original finish worn to gray. As noted in the records the entire receiver is plated including the brass carrier and bolt. The stock retains a pleasing rich color and finish with nice wood-to-metal fit and no cracks. One old surface nick near upper tang on left side and bruise on right side of wrist. Lyman combination front sight is marked on edge of globe “PAT.AUG.31.86-JULY.14.91”. Original full buckhorn rear sight (elevator missing). Tang peep sight is in nice condition overall but does not lock into standing position when flipped up. Clear original Winchester barrel address, caliber marking, model designation, and serial number "214273" on lower tang. The caliber marking on the carrier is worn very faint but legible. Action is very crisp and functions smoothly and securely. Single set trigger functions properly. Hammer will drop from half-cock safety if trigger is pulled. Bore has good rifling overall with moderate/heavy blackpowder frosting and fine pinprick pitting throughout. A very interesting and attractive special order '73 Winchester!
