M-1895 RARITY! U.S. GOVERNMENT MARKED/INSPECTED MUSKET, .30-40 CAL., #17XXX, MADE 1898
Description: MODEL 1895 RARITY! U.S. GOVERNMENT MARKED/INSPECTED MUSKET, .30-40 CAL., #17XXX, MADE 1898. The U.S. Government ordered 10,000 of these for the Spanish American War in 1898. Except for 100 that went to the Philippines, they were never issued and in 1906 got sold as surplus to a major dealer of the time who sold them to Cuba. Soon after, many found their way to Mexico. Bruce Canfields book THE WINCHESTER IN THE SERVICE has good information on these and he states: "The U.S. surcharged M1895 muskets and carbines are rarely seen today. Almost without exception, the few guns that do appear on the market from time to time are in well worn condition. It has been reported that many of these guns which had been sent to Cuba in 1906 eventually found their way to Mexico where they were subjected to a great deal of use and apparent abuse..." Understandable, as the Mexican Revolution ran from 1910 to 1920. This is a fine example that has the correct large "U.S." stamping on the receiver ring as well as the "K.S.M." inspector stamping on the hammer, lever etc. The barrel shows good aged blue mixing brown with original sights, bayonet lug front barrel band etc. Finematching handguard, forearm and stock with good wood to metal fit and correct swivels etc. The receiver has fine markings and is a similar aged blue mixing brown patina with better blue in the morre protected areas and on the magazine sides and bolt. Tight action with excellent sharp bore that is only a little dark and NOT pitted. The half-cock safety is a little weak, but holds unless the trigger is pulled hard. Not many of these are in collections and this is a very decent antique example.
