Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 35 Rem EXTREMELY RARE!
Description: Exceedingly rare Winchester Model 70 in 35 Rem Caliber!! In my estimation, this caliber is the absolute most difficult 70 to locate despite production numbers giving the 300 Savage a very slight edge in rarity. I have seen and owned considerably more 300 Savages than 35 Rems! These were cataloged from 1941-47 but continued to be produced and sold until 1954 from previously manufactured components. Only 404 ever manufactured!! The S/N of this example is 179*** with matching scribed bolt made in 1951. The barrel date is 1941 and it is positively genuine, with perfect stampings and just the right amount of patina, along with a perfectly sculpted integral front sight ramp. This rifle has a slightly smaller breech bolt face recess than a standard rifle's .485 due to the 35's smaller case head diameter. This is not easy to precisely measure, due to being an imperfect circle with one end open, but I clearly get from .475-.480 depending on how the caliper contacts, and that appears to be correct. The other components unique to a 35 Rem are also present, including a #7 Magazine box, a #5 ejector, and the correctly positioned bolt collar stop. The gun seems to function well, and has an excellent bore. Overall condition is very nice, with good eye appeal. There are some light handling marks and wear throughout, but nothing at all distracting. Frankly, I would rather see some of that than an absolutely perfect specimen that would only draw suspicion. Taken together, I am confident that this is a genuine Model 70 with a factory produced 35 Remington caliber barrel and one of the very few chances a collector may ever have to obtain one!
