1951 Vintage Winchester Model 70 Rifle in .270 Winchester w/ Vintage Leupold VX-II 2-7x28mm Scope
** Nice Example of an American Classic! ** SOLD
Description: This is a very nice all-original pre-64 Winchester Model 70 chambered in .270 Winchester caliber complete with a vintage Leupold VX-II 2-7x28 scope on Redfield mounts. This particular rifle is serial number 183388 and was made in 1951. The pre-64 Winchester Model 70's are considered one of the finest American-made rifles of all-time, and are sought-after by collectors and shooters alike today. Introduced by Winchester in 1937, the Model 70 was offered in 18 calibers and three barrel lengths of 24", 25", or 26" inches, with a 5 or 4-shot (magnum calibers) internal box magazine in a checkered Walnut pistol-grip stock. The Model 70 action was based off of the 98 Mauser action and featured controlled-round feeding and a full-length extractor, an extremely strong, accurate, and reliable design. Advertised by Winchester as "The Rifleman's Rifle", the Model 70 quickly earned a reputation for being THE top-of-the-line bolt-action repeating rifle. This .270 Winchester example retains the original factory blue finish and has a great look to it. The gloss blue on the barrel still shows bright and glossy, with only some handling marks and minor wear in places. The matte blue factory finish on the receiver and bolt handle is intact and has a nice consistent clean look to it with the only noticable wear on the bolt handle knob. The gloss blue factory finish on the triggerguard and floorplate still looks good as well, with the vast majority of finish wear here occuring on the edges of the parts with the flat areas still showing a nice dark blue. As you can see in the pictures provided, all of the factory blued parts go together great with a matching patina that is consistent across the board. The bore in this Model 70 is excellent and bright. The rifling still shows sharp lands and grooves and there is no visible pitting or imperfections. The factory original stock on this rifle is in great shape overall, free from any cracks, chips, or repairs. The hand-cut checkering is still nicely defined and clean, without any major wear or damage. The factory-installed sling swivels are still in place on this Winchester and in good condition. At some point along the way a "White Line" recoil pad has been added, with the length of pull measuring 13.75" inches to the end of the pad. The pad is certainly old and has hardened, losing most of it's recoil absorbing properties. All of the controls and functions on this Winchester are in perfect working order. The action is smooth and precise, turning into battery with no wiggle or slop. The trigger on this Model 70 is excellent, breaking like a glass rod with a medium-light pull with no grit or excessive travel. As mentioned before, this rifle comes with a vintage Leupold VX-II 2-7x28mm scope already mounted up on it in vintage Redfield mounts. The Leupold scope shows some dings and handling marks in the exterior gloss black finish, but has perfect optics which are bright and clear. This compact model scope has a duplex reticle and both the windage and elevation adjustments are in perfect working order. We have no doubt that this Leupold will hold a perfect "zero" on this rifle but if there are any issues it has Leupold's famous lifetime warranty. If you have been looking for a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 for your collection this 1951 vintage model would be a great choice. It still has enough condition to be considered an investment but at the same time shows enough wear that you could carry it afield without feeling bad. This is a true American classic and could be carried with pride into any hunting camp in the world.
