Minty" Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 Rifle in .257 Roberts
Description:
Minty Winchester Model 70, .257 Roberts made in 1953. I bought this rifle at the Las Vegas Antique Arms Show in the 1990's from a friend and collector of fine arms. When I asked him why he was selling such a minty 257, he told me that it was because he had a "New in the Box" one at home. His name was Bob Cantonwine and he was a great mentor to me over the years. He seemed to know everything about the older Model 70s and he was always eager to discuss the fine points. I miss him. I bought this one because it was the nicest, all original .257 Roberts that I had ever seen. At first glance, it looked like a brand new rifle. If you look very closely, however, you can see just a hint of bluing wear on the sharp edges of the muzzle and on the front sight hood. The blue on the bolt handle is also partly thinning. There is a slight mark on the left side of the stock where it looks like the bolt handle of another model 70 made contact. I have tried to show those in my photos. There was a scope mounted at one time and it shows on the rear receiver bridge, again, look at the photo. The stock has that great "Dry Look" that shows that it has not been carried a lot. When a model 70 has been handled a lot, the finish develops a sheen caused by many hands actually wearing the finish smooth, and making it shine (another thing that Bob taught me). The bolt is numbered to the receiver. I didn't include a picture because I could not get a good one but you can see it under a good light. Some are easy to see, some are harder. Bolt Serial numbers were applied by hand with an electric discharge (EDM) and there was little consistency. The bore appears perfect with a bright bore and sharp riflings. This one has the high comb stock that was optional in 1953. The high comb stock became standard about 1955 or 1956. Because of the high comb, it has the folding rear sight making it easy to mount a scope. This is a great rifle in amazing condition and even better, it is in .257 Roberts, a very collectable chambering. Thank you for looking!
