UNUSUAL SPECIAL ORDER EARLY 1895 RIFLE IN .35WCF CALIBER, #39XXX, MADE 1902
Description: UNUSUAL SPECIAL ORDER EARLY 1895 RIFLE IN .35WCF CALIBER, #39XXX, MADE 1902. This is a particularly fine condition rifle that was special ordered with a shotgun butt plate. It also has unusual "striped" walnut in the butt stock and forearm- probably not a special order, but often selected by Winchester on rifles with extra features. The heavy dark striping runs the full length of the stock and forearm and one can actually "feel" the stripes if you run your hand over the stock as the density of the walnut is different in this area- I've seen this before on stocks with this grain structure and in most cases you can feel it. This one is also fitted with a Lyman 21 "Climin' Lyman" receiver sight. The rear dovetail has a filler blank in it and the front sight is an unusual short tube or globe with a small ivory bead/blade on the top section mounted in the correct Winchester base- I've only seen a few of these. The receiver retains most of the original deep blue with only very slight edge wear and very light upper tang wear that retains fine blue. The magazine also shows fine blue and only the lever is mixing gray. Exc. barrel blue, exc. markings, tight action and strong safety half-cock, smooth steel shotgun butt plate, exc. stock with tight wood to metal fit and excellent forend with ebony wedge schnable tip. The Lyman 21 sight retains the small folding aperture in the eye piece. Bore is bright and excellent. The .35 WCF was a very powerful cartridge that is simply the .405 case necked to take standard .358" diameter bullets. A sharp special order '95 in exceptional condition.
