Winchester 1892 .44 WCF – TAKEDOWN, 1903, FIGURED WOOD, vintage firearms inc
Description:
General Specs: Winchester, 1903, .44WCF, 7lbs. 3oz., LOP 13"
Serial Number: 218005
The Winchester Model 1892 is John Browning’s design that closely mirrored the venerable 1886 action but for the smaller handgun calibers that were made popular by Winchester. Initially made in.32 W.C.F (.32-20), .38 W.C.F. (.38-40), and .44 W.C.F (.44-40). Winchester also added the .25 W.C.F. (.25-20) to the Model 1892 line. The most produced and desirable caliber was the .44-40 which carried the stopping power needed in those dangerous moments. It was a big deal in those times to be able to carry a sidearm and long gun in the same caliber so ammunition would be universal. This fine Winchester Model 1892, sn218005 produced in 1903, was special ordered as a takedown rifle in .44-40 and utilized in Colt’s SAA revolver in the same caliber. What a great pairing if you have or acquire a nice Colt SAA “FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER” to go with this gun! This gun is in excellent, factory original condition with a 24” octagon barrel with a superb, mirror shiny bore, sharp crisp rifling, a bore that rates 9.5 on a scale of 10. The barrel and magazine tube retain 98% factory blue, the action retains 65% factory blue, the lever and hammer retain about 97% factory case color, the crescent steel buttplate has 80% factory case color, and the very well-figured wood is factory original with no cracks and has 80% factory varnish with light handling marks and some oil soaking at the wrist. When a Winchester lever gun was ordered with special features it often got better wood than an ordinary standard rifle, and this gun is a perfect example of that practice. It is waaay better than a standard rifle’s wood. The takedown barrel is tight on the frame, the mechanics are excellent, and the screws are perfect. The Model 1892 was one of Winchester’s most popular rifles and was prominently displayed in the western movies and TV shows like the Rifleman. Still a viable rifle to shoot today, and ammunition is readily available. This Model 1892 has all the most desirable features, ie takedown octagon barrel, superb bore, lots of factory condition, well figured wood, full length mag tube, and crescent steel buttplate…a cowboy’s rifle indeed! You will note in the Cody Firearms Museum info sheet the gun is documented as described, except the record shows a round barrel. There are occasions when the records are in error, or the customer changed the specifications, but the order card info never got changed. This is one of those times, as the barrel is correct to this gun. Thanks for looking, and don’t miss out on this nice, factory original rifle. It won’t last long!
