Winchester 1886 Lightweight Take Down Rifle - mfg. 1902 - Higher Condition
Description: Offered for your consideration is this fine 1886 Winchester Lightweight rifle in 33 WCF caliber that was made in 1902, the first year of production for the 33 WCF cartridge. Overall, it is in much higher condition than found on most turn of the century 1886 rifles. The 24 inch barrel retains 98% factory blue with minor scattered use marks and edge wear at the muzzle. The bore is as new, sharp and bright. I rate it 10 on a 10 scale. The magazine/take down tube and end cap retain 98% blue. The fore end cap retains full blue with slight thinning on the leading edge. The receiver is mechanically excellent, feeds, chambers and ejects smoothly. Many receivers of this era have the blue flaking off. This one retains full factory high polish blue on the receiver sides. There are numerous small use and handling marks and some sharp edge and carry wear on other areas of the receiver as you can see in the photos. The hammer retains all of the bright, vivid case colors, The lever retains case color near the receiver with much of the lever taking on a bright plated appearance as the case colors have faded. The take down function is excellent, locks up tight with no wear or over-travel. The take down plate is shifting to a plum blue color. The butt-stock and forearm are tight and solid. Made of nicely grained black walnut, they are free of chips, cracks or extra holes. There are a few light handing marks but nothing I would call noteworthy. The hard rubber butt-plate is intact and free of cracks or chips. I don’t believe this fine Winchester saw a lot of field use. In overall excellent condition, it is a truly fine example of American craftsmanship not seen in today’s production guns.
