1884 Vintage Winchester Model 1876 3rd Model Rifle in .40-60 Winchester w/ 22" Inch Octagon Barrel
** The "Centennial" Winchester SOLD
Description: This is a nice example of a scarce 22" Winchester Model 1876 lever-action rifle manufactured in 1884 with a factory special order single-set trigger and chambered in .40-60 Winchester. The Winchester Model 1876 was manufactured from 1876 until 1897, with a total of only 63,871 made. It is often called the Centennial Model as it's introduction coincided with the 1876 U.S. Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, PA. The Model 1876 design was essentially a larger and more robust Model 1873, designed to handle larger and more powerful cartridges. The lever-action Model 1876 was offered in 4 different calibers from .40-60 Winchester to .50-95 Express, and three different barrel lengths of 22", 26", or 28" inches in either round or octagon profiles. The Model 1876 rifle models feature a smooth Walnut stock set with a steel forend cap and crescent buttplate with a straight wrist buttstock. This particular example is serial number 42636, making it a 3rd Variation or 3rd Model manufactured in 1884. This Winchester features a 22" octagon barrel with factory iron sights(missing the rear elevator), a factory single-set trigger, and is chambered in .40-60 Winchester. We measured from the center of the hanger to the end of the magazine tube and it measures on the nose 3 & 5/8ths inches, the proper distance. The original factory blue finish on this gun has turned to a brown patina with some original blue finish showing in only a few protected areas. As you can see from the pictures, despite the lack of blue finish showing this is a good-looking Winchester that is consistent from one end to the other. The bore in this Model 1876 still shows a lot of strong rifling but does have some pitting throughout the barrel. There are no real bad spots and it should be an excellent shooter if the new owner so chooses. The original stock set on this Winchester has been refinshed at some point, likely in the last 60 years or so. The forearm and buttstock are a perfect match to each other and show a semi-gloss finish. The American Walnut stock set is very attractive but shows it's age with some repaired cracks on the forearm as well as some small handling marks/dings/dents. The repaired cracks in the forearm are hard to see unless you look very closely, and are likely the reason the wood was refinished to start with. All of the original stock hardware is intact and in good condition, including the original crescent buttplate with a sliding trap for a cleaning kit. As it sits now the stock set is extremely solid with a rock-solid wrist and should last another 136 plus years. The action on this Winchester is smooth and precise. The lever-action bolt locks into battery perfectly with a nice tight lever, and slides out of battery precisely as the brass shell lifter rises properly in place. The adjustable single-set trigger functions perfectly. The only fault we can find in this Winchester's mechanics is the safety notch or half-cock notch is not intact on the hammer. The hammer still cocks properly and drops with a light trigger pull, but does not have the half-cock position to carry one in the chamber safely. This is not a hard fix, a new hammer could be swapped in or a gunsmith could re-cut the half-cock notch in the original hammer. As it sits, this Winchester would not only be a great long-term investment, but would a blast to shoot as well. If you have been looking for one of these sought-after Winchester "Centennial" Model 1876's for your collection, here is your chance to get a scarce one at a great price.
