Winchester Model 1873 First Model Rifle 28" OB FM Set Trigger Man. 1876
Description:
You are viewing one used Winchester Model 1873 rifle. This is a First Model having all the correct First Model parts: rounded lever latch, screw-in magazine tube cap, oval thumbprint dust cover that slides into the receiver frame, early rear sight, German silver blade front sight without the set screw, and the two-screw receiver. Of course it is caliber 44 WCF and is unmarked (neither on barrel nor carrier block) as all First Model 1873s are. This one also sports a special order 28" full octagon barrel, has a full magazine, and a set trigger, all verified by Cody Museum records, manufactured and shipped in 1876. Overall metal has about 50-60% coverage and is patina; loading gate is a deeper plum color. All markings are very legible and the metal has never been touched up with any reblue. The stocks are amazingly sound - no splits, no cracks, no extra holes, just normal usage marks, surprising for a 140-year-old gun. The stocks have been lightly cleaned and refinished, are shy of the metal in some spots but look very nice, not all gunky and oil-stained as many of the old stocks get. Original buttplate has the trapdoor for the cleaning tools but no tools are present. Set trigger screw broke off at some point in its life but the set trigger still works as it should, as does the half-cock position. Action is still smooth with no looseness and the dust cover still slides freely without any hitch or snag. Another great feature of this rifle is the bore, way above average for an 1873, especially an early one such as this. Plenty of rifling with only minor scattered pitting, no big gouges and no big craters, no bulges, and the barrel is still full length (many of the old guns got cut down, thankfully this one is totally intact and has all of its original parts). The magazine tube is still snug with no wobble, a common problem with the extra long rifles was the mag tube loosening over time. Even the screw heads show little or no marks, many seem to never have been turned. According to the late George Madis, the 28" rifle will be found less often than the 30" as many dealers of the day kept the 30" in stock; the 28" guns had to be made up and the customer waited. Considering the survival rate of the antique models is 10% or less, this is one you won't want to miss out on. This is an antique so it can be shipped directly to you assuming your local laws allow it. No international sales. Will ship with insurance at no cost to the buyer (free shipping!!!). Copy of Cody email sheet will accompany rifle. Payment via discreet PayPal, bank check, or USPS money order. Call 315.251.4799 or email with questions, concerns, offers. Thanks for looking!!!
