Visit us online at JeremiahJohnsonTrading or find us on Facebook. Our shop is located at 1622 Saybrook Rd. Haddam, CT. Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Rare Authentic Native American Plains Indian Owned Model 1873 Winchester Lever Action Repeating Rifle, .38-40 WCF, mfg. 1884. This is a fantastic example of a real deal Indian warrior's rifle which pre-dates the battle of Wounded Knee. Typical of all Native American owned guns it shows very heavy wear and evidence of prolonged exposure to the elements. The 24" long octagon barrel retains it's original dovetailed blade front sight and rear sight which has partially broken away. The metal has a dark rust/gray patina with fine pinprick surface pitting scattered throughout. The stock shows very heavy wear with considerable shrinkage and checking. The buttplate was intentionally removed to be repurposed as a hide scraper which is a very common trait of Indian owned rifles. The stock is decorated with hand made brass tacks which show appropriate age and placement. Original hammer, lever, trigger, forend cap, and magazine retaining band. The dustcover, upper tang screws, and lever locking nut are missing. Clear Winchester barrel address and serial number with only partial caliber marking visible. The hammer cocks, locks up, and fires securely. The lever operates correctly however the brass carrier requires manual assistance to move which it does not fully accomplish due to internal corrosion so subsequently the action does not cycle properly. It could be made operational if desired with cleaning however I would personally leave it as is. The bore remains totally uncleaned and is naturally quite dirty. Winchester rifles were highly prized among Native American warriors during the Wild West era and were instrumental in their struggle for survival. A rare and iconic piece of history ready for display. Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
