Winchester
Model
1895
Rare configuration - Nice rifle
Description: ( Sale Pending - Nick A. ) This is a Winchester model 1895 with a nice combination of factory option features. It is a take down, with a Saddle/or sling ring, with sling eyes, fish hook swivels and vintage sling. It has a Lyman 21 rear sight that was likely from the factory, it is marked 'WR' on the back, and a Marbles front sight. Rarely will you see a take down with a saddle ring - one possible theory is that this was special ordered by one of the big retailers for hunters in the north woods or western mountains. It is chambered in the .30 - 03 Govt. caliber - fairly scarce in the 1895, being replaced a few years later by the .30-06. The .30-03 however was loaded with a heavy bullet which made it a good hunting load, and the 1895 in this caliber remained in the Winchester catalog for many years. This rifle, according to The Winchester Collectors site was built in 1913. *** Please note - some people will tell you that it is okay to use .30-06 ammo in the .30-03, I do not recommend this. Buffalo Arms sometimes has loaded 30-03 ammo and it is loaded to 45,000 psi. I have fired this rifle with handloads using Hawk 200 gr. round tips, seated close to the lands and have had very good accuracy with moderate loads. *** This rifle has a 24" barrel with a very good, near excellent bore - it has great lands and grooves the whole way, with just some darkening in the grooves at the breech end, the throat looks good, the bore has shine and I would give it an 8.5 or better - it is a great shooter. Mechanically this rifle is excellent, it functions perfectly, the takedown is snug.
The wood is very good also, it is tight without chips, cracks, etc. I do think the stocks were very lightly refinished at some time - however the wood fits very well, and generally it is flush to the metal or just proud. Overall I think this is great looking Winchester - 112 years ago this would have been outfitted just about perfectly to hunt just about any big game. ***** This rifle is classed as a 'modern firearm' - it must ship to a FFL or C&R. I am a FFL and must adhere to all federal and state regs., Please know your local laws. Certified funds are preferred, personal checks are acceptable, and I can accept a C.Card over the phone with a .03% fee. The price includes well packed shipping and full coverage insurance. ***** Thank you
