Description:
This is a Winchester 1885 in 38/55. It has a 30", 1/2 octagon 1/2 round #4 barrel. The serial number was applied to the action in December of 1894 and must have sat around until a custom order for it came in, leaving the warehouse February 1897. The stock is custom work and I'm guessing done not too long after the rifle left the warehouse. It is a professionally done stock with fine checkering and a heavy swiss style buttplate. The perchbelly stock and pronged buttplate are very much in the style of George Schoyen (1845-1916). The bore is excellent. There is plenty of fading case harding on the receiver. The action and close coupled double set trigger work beautifully. The Winchester vernier rear sight works as it should as does the (farely rare and specially ordered for this rifle) Lyman No.7 windage front sight. There are also vintage scope mounts, which are typical on this style rifle.The only hicup is a crack on the upper right side of the forend near the receiver. It has been glued and hasn't moved over the time I've owned it. Overall, this is a very nice example of a Scheutzen rifle still capable of 200 (and beyond) yard excellence!!! The rifle will ship insured and in a hard case for protection. It is an antique and will be sent directly to you unless you live in a state that has restrictions.
