Very Fine Winchester Model 1873 First 1st Model Rifle
Description:
Winchester 1873 1st Model Rifle in High Condition. Standard 24" Round Barrel, Full Magazine with Crescent Buttplate in 44 Winchester Center Fire aka 44-40. In my experience, most 1st Model rifles we've encountered over the past 35 years of collecting have had round barrels rather than octagon. Serial number is in the 23,000 range and was built in 1876. Matching factory internal assembly numbers on the lower tang (1391), stock (1391) , and buttplate (1391). See Photos. This 1873 just recently came out of a 40 year old collection. We called the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody. Wyoming which houses the original Winchester Factory Records and they confirmed its configuration and provided the original shipping date. Here is the following information they provided to our research query:
WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 -
SERIAL NUMBER 23237
Type: Rifle Barrel
Type: Round
Trigger: Plain
Received in warehouse on October 25, 1876
Shipped from warehouse on May 08, 1878,
Order number 11778
Date: October 25, 2021 - Searched by: gm/jb
Going through this one, it is an all original and correct 1st Model 1873 with the long oval checkered thumb print dust cover. The lever is swept back behind the trigger as 1st Models have no trigger safety block and the early style screw-in lever latch that is unique to the Henry, Model 1866, and 1st Model 73's under 28/29,000 serial range. The magazine tube has the early screw-in plug, bolt face has a bushing around the firing pin, and correct original sights which include the early style shorter rear sight with beveled edges and checkered sides of the semi-buckhorn. Notice the early style narrow slots on the screws and the correct first style sideplates with the smaller screw head and exposed loading port screw. As 44-40 was the only caliber available when this rifle was made, there is no caliber marking on the bronze loading block or the top of the barrel. Barrel has the correct 2 line Winchester address with 1860 and 1866 Patent dates while the upper tang is simply marked "Model 1873". No extra holes or modifications. Condition-Wise, this rifle is in NRA Antique Fine Plus Condition with 75% strong original bright blue on the frame that shows edges wear and some streaky lossed of blue mostly towards the front. Hammer still shows generous amounts of original case colors while the lever is more faded to a silvery grey with hints of color. Barrel shows approximately 50% original blue that is strongest towards the back and in protected areas while the magazine tube shows 25% original blue towards the protected areas as it appears this rifle was carried a bit in a scabbard which wore off some of the blue. There is still about 30% original blue on the forend cap. The wood is in Fine Condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs with nice wood to metal fit having never been sanded or cleaned. There are some light handling marks but very respectable early walnut that still has its nice light reddish brown tones with most of its original factory oil finish intact. The bore is Excellent...bright and shiny with strong lands and grooves and no pits. Action is excellent. Antique, Pre-1898. No FFL required under Federal law however, this is considered to be a firearm in NJ. No sales to NYC, Chicago, or DC. Sorry, no international sales. Buyer must be 18 years of age and a law-abiding US Citizen. $50.00 shipping in lower US 48.
