Atlanta Police Inscribed Winchester Third Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle – 1890 Antique
Description:
This rare Winchester Third Model 1873 Lever Action rifle was Manufactured in 1890 and is one of approximately 125 Model 1873 Winchester rifles ordered by the Atlanta Police Department in 1889-90 in two orders. Like all in the rifles in these two orders, it letters as a rifle in caliber 44-40, with octagon barrel, special order sling swivels, and factory engraving on the left side plate that reads "Atlanta Police" followed by a rack or inventory number. This particular rifle is number "117". The serial number is 331,963, which is in the same range as the majority of the other Atlanta Police rifles. These Atlanta Police rifles are the only documented Model 1873 Winchesters ever made that were engraved by the factory for a Police Department. This rifle comes with a factory letter from the Cody Firearms Museum that states the following:
Serial number applied on February 12, 1890
Type: Rifle
Caliber: .44
Barrel Type: Octagon
Trigger: Plain
Engraved on left hand side plate "Atlanta Police -- #117"
Sling and Swivels
Received in warehouse on February 21, 1890
Shipped from warehouse on February 24, 1890, Order number 9045
The rifle has a 24” octagon barrel, the standard two-line address/patent and caliber markings on the top barrel flat, model designation on the upper tang, caliber marking on the bottom of the cartridge elevator, dust cover rail integral to the receiver and dust cover with serrations at the rear, dovetail blade front sight and elevation adjustable rear sight, sling swivels on the underside of the forend cap and buttstock, buttstock fitted with a trapdoor crescent buttplate containing an origianl four-piece cleaning rod witht he correct diameter of 0.234".
There are a few minor hairline cracks in the wood (on both sides of the buttstock near the bottom of the buttplate and on both sides of the rear portion of the foregrip near the receiver) that appear to be stable – please see detailed pictures. The action is tight and the lever still snaps shut. The toggle links are free of cracks and have no play in them and the sear is in excellent condition. Please email me for more pictures.
A detailed internet search conducted in July 2023 revealed that only 33 of the original 125 rifles have appeared for sale in recent history. This is your chance to own a scarce and desirable 1873 with iron-clad 19th century law-enforcement provenance!
This 123 yea-old rifle is classified as an Antique and in most cases can be sent directly to your home address. Please check your State and local laws. Please email me with for more pictures or if you have any questions.
