1895 Winchester Carbine Roll Marked "NATIONAL GUARD OF COLORADO
Description:
This is an exceptionally rare high condition 1895 Winchester carbine marked “NATIONAL GUARD OF COLORADO” on the right side of the receiver. 80% blue, excellent and well fitted stocks that have been lightly sanded, cut for a hand guard but not present with a special order 1895 “buckhorn” sporting rear sight (i.e. not a standard Krag sight). The rifle has some handling marks and rack wear on the box magazine. Some light scratches on the receiver and one screw that has been worn and turned by use of an incorrect size screwdriver on the lower tang. Markings are crisp and clear, the bore is strong and I don’t believe the metal has been refinished.
Marked 2 D 29 on the receiver ring (2nd Colorado NG regiment, Company D, 29th rifle) and issued in Pueblo CO and used in the 1903 Cripple Creek miner’s strike. The rifle has U.S. Inspector KSM marks on the barrel, bolt, and lower left side of the lever, and letters as a musket made in 1898. The rifle has been professionally converted to a carbine configuration, I believe by the National Guard armorers.

The U.S. Army ordered 10,000 Winchester 1895 Muskets for the Spanish–American War, but the war ended before they arrived at the front and the rifles where returned to Winchester. Many parts were marked "K.S.M." by ordnance inspector Kelly S. Morse. Approximately 400 of the original U.S. ordered rifles were later rebuilt and roll marked “National Guard of Colorado and issued to the state guard in 1899. Colorado rifles have unit markings on the receiver ring instead of the “U.S.” found on Army muskets. These rifles were used by the Colorado National Guard in a number of mine strikes and civil disturbances including the Cripple/Telluride/Trinidad strikes of 1903-04. A limited number of muskets where converted by the state into carbines for use by mounted troops, officers, and it is believed some had been used by the Colorado State Prison system in Canon City Colorado.
