Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ M1873 Winchester Lever Action Repeating Rifle Dug Relic from Fort Assinniboine, Montana, .44-40 WCF, mfg. circa 1880's. We purchased this rifle years ago as part of a huge collection of relics that had been dug at old US fort sites throughout the Midwest including Forts Custer, Sully, Sanders, Maginnis, & Assiniboine. Fort Assinniboine was completed in 1879 at the request of General Phillip Sheridan to ward off attacks from Sioux Indians following Custer's disastrous defeat at Little Big Horn. The famous 10th US Cavalry "Buffalo Soldiers" were among those who garrisoned Assinniboine during the Indian Wars and later the fort became a military reservation for the Chippewa and Cree. Fort Assinniboine was closed by the Army in 1911. This Winchester rifle is a true dug relic that likely went down fighting as evidenced by the turned lever latch, cocked hammer, and open dust cover. Standard length 24" octagon barrel retains it's original front sight with rear sight missing. The stock has rotted away along with the portion of the magazine tube beyond the forend cap. Otherwise it appears complete just as it was the day it was lost. The rifle has not been cleaned and there is still dirt present within. This would look great mounted on a board or shadow box surrounded by other frontier relics. A genuine piece of Wild West history! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only. For the purpose of these conditions the term "antique firearm" will hence include muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions.
