Description: SELDOM SEEN WINCHESTER MODEL 1883 THIRD MODEL HOTCHKISS .45-70 MUSKET, #81XXX, MADE 1895. This was the final iteration of the bolt action repeating Winchesters. This model is rarely encountered as Winchester made 56,504 muskets (along with a few sporters and carbines) with the bulk of them being exported abroad, especially to China. Totally different in appearance than the first and second models, the Third is certainly the most handsome. This example has no foreign proofs or military markings and was no doubt sold on the U.S. market. The receiver is an attractive mottled gray/brown and shows no signs of being cleaned. The lower tang has all the correct Winchester Hotchkiss markings. the 28" barrel with cleaning rod is an aged and uncleaned gray/brown with some scattered light freckling. Winchester address and .45-70 caliber markings are clear. Correct military style rear sight. Wood is solid and shows normal handling marks. Action functions properly and the magazine tube in the butt stock retains the correct brass follower etc. Bore is bright and excellent! Complete with military style leather sling. One of the most difficult to find Winchesters in any condition.
