1894 Vintage Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action in .40-65 Winchester Caliber ** Antique **
Description:
Here we have a very nice and collectable Winchester Model 1886 lever action chambered in .40-65 WCF caliber. The Winchester Model 1886 was a lever-action repeating rifle designed by John Browning to handle some of the more powerful cartridges of the period. Originally chambered in .45-70, .45-90 WCF, and .40-82 WCF, it was later offered in a half dozen other large cartridges, including the .50-110 Winchester. Despite being originally designed for use with black powder, the action was strong enough to make the jump to smokeless powder with only minor modifications, and was subsequently chambered in the smokeless .33 WCF cartridge beginning in 1903. This rifle was made in 1894 and as such qualifies as an antique. The .40-65 caliber was introduced in 1887 for the Winchester Model 1886, and available in Winchester single shots and in the Marlin Model 1895, it was "a further effort to put more steam" in repeating rifle cartridges. In the modern era, the cartridge has gained favor for metallic silhouette shooting and Black Powder Cartridge Rifle matches where it serves as a low-recoil alternative to the common 45–70. It was commercially available in black and smokeless varieties until around 1935, and can be handloaded by reforming .45-70 brass. This particular example is in very good overall condition both physically and mechanically. The 26" barrel is round and has a very good bore with strong rifling. This rifle has an elevation adjustable rear sight and the front sight is dovetailed with a white dot. The metal has some high edge wear and handling marks....the receiver has worn to a handsome warm patina and the forend cap retains much of it's original finish. The stock and forend are in good condition with some pressure marks and a few scratches. The metal butt plate is in very good condition. This amazing Winchester would make a great addition to a collection or a great start to a new collection of historical rifles.
