Late “1839” Dated Flintlock Musket
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1822 Whitney Contract Flintlock Musket, made in 1839 in New Haven, Connecticut. This is an example from the second government contract that the Whitney company landed, one of only 24,000 pieces. This is an example of a late flintlock musket. The percussion firing system was just around the bend. This musket would have had the Mexican-American War ahead of it, as well as the various Indian Wars preceding the American Civil War.
The lock is marked “U.S./E. WHITNEY” and “NEW HAVEN/1839”. The top of the barrel tang is also dated “1839”. Butt plate is marked “US”. The left side of the barrel bears a circle “P” proof mark. The musket is equipped with a leather sling with brass hardware and a M1861 ramrod. The breech of the barrel indicates that this was a reconversion to flintlock long ago.
The overall condition is fair. The metal surfaces have a mixed patina. The walnut stock is cracked around the lock and has had some repair. The smooth bore is untouched. The action is strong. Her is a flintlock musket that has been there and done that with all the scars to show for it!
