Description:
Westley Richards .425 Westley Richards Nitro Express. This rifle was built by Westley Richards for the round they brought out in either 1908 (John Taylor) or 1909 (Richards Barnes). The round is a good all around medium heavy bore cartridge that pushes a 410 grain bullet to a muzzle velocity of 2350 /2410 FPS, case length is 2.64" and the head diameter is .543" with a rebated rim at .467 for the standard Mauser action, energy 5010 foot-pounds. It is a bit stronger than the common .458 Winchester and was the largest of the bolt rifles for a while after it's introduction. The cartridge is an odd looking and very effective round according to Craig Boddington. John Taylor thought it "A most excellent cartridge and a real killer!" I have seen several references over the years to these bolt rifles having been fitted with 28" barrels as they are in Boddington's excellent book : Safari Rifles and John Taylor's : African Rifles and Cartridges, however all of the rifles I have seen in this cartridge from Westley Richards have been 25" barrels including this rifle. The action is clean with open scroll and a stippled top forward ring, single trigger, lever release floorplate with border engraving and a panel that may have held initials but has been cleaned of them, the bolt body has been nickled or chromed at some point, reblued and softened engraving. The barrel is 25" with a nice reblue, very clean bore, rear sight is 2 folding, hooded front sight with a small bead, barrel band sling swivel. The Westley marking is faint as are the proofs due to the reblue, though they can both be clearly seen. The stock looks to be original to the gun and is a really great example of British bolt rifle building skill! the wood is straight grained with nice chequering and finish, pistol grip to a steel cap, the crestplate remians unmarked, The cheekpiece is understated and lovely. 14" length of pull to a period Silvers pad.
