1st Year Production 1963 Weatherby Mark V Varmintmaster
in .224 Weatherby Magnum
** Scarce Rifle in Beautiful Shape! **
Description: This is one cool little German-manufactured Weatherby that we very seldomly see. The Weatherby Mark V Varmintmaster rifle was introduced in 1963 as a lightened and scaled down version of the standard Mark V. This was acheived by reducing the size of most of the standard Mark V parts by 20%. It was offered with a 24" standard weight barrel or 26" inch heavy weight barrel in either .22-250 caliber or .224 Weatherby Magnum (also known as .224 Varmintmaster). It featured a 5-round internal box magazine with a hinged floorplate, a 2-position bolt-mounted safety, and was factory drilled and tapped for optics. Outside of the smaller stature of this rifle, it is identical to the full size Weatherby Mark V's made by J.P Sauer in West Germany. The Mark V Varmintmaster was made in West Germany for a total of 9 years from 1963 to 1972, with only 7159 manufactured over that time period. They were quite low production when compared to the number of standard Mark V's made by J.P Sauer, which was well over 50,000 rifles by 1972. This particular Mark V Varmintmaster was made in the very first year of production and is a beautiful all-original example. It is in the very sought-after .224 Weatherby Magnum chambering. The serial number range for this model started with S1000, and this rifle is serial number S1488 making it the 488th rifle made. The original factory gloss blue finish rates 97% and has a beautiful clean appearance. There is a little finish loss on the muzzle crown at the highest point, some thinning finish on the bolt knob, and if you look very closely at all of the metal parts there are a few tiny handling marks. None of these deductions take away from the overall clean look of this rifle. The bore in the 24" inch sporter style barrel is excellent. There is no visible pitting or erosion, and the rifling still looks prominent and sharp. It is obvious that this rifle has been fired very little since it left the factory. The original stock on this Varmintmaster is in excellent condition overall. It is free from any cracks, repairs, or major damage of any kind. There are some very minor handling/storage marks/dings in the wood but nothing that stands out. The original clear gloss finish is still intact and glossy with the exception of the finish over the Weatherby signature diamond on the bottom of the pistol grip, which shows some yellowing and cracking over the diamond only. The checkered panels are still crisp and free from any soiling or wear. The factory installed and Weatherby-branded recoil pad is in great shape, perfectly fit and tight to the wood, and the factory installed sling swivel studs are still in place. The action on this rifle is smooth and precise, and it locks into battery tightly with no wiggle. All of the controls work 100% like the day it left the factory, and the trigger is superb with a light and crisp break. This Varmintmaster comes with period Refiled bases already installed but no rings. This little rifle is really a beauty inside and out. If you have been looking for one of these hard to find Weatherby Mark V Varmintmaster rifles for your collection this 1st year production example would be an excellent choice. It would be extremely hard to find another all-original example in any better condition, and nearly impossible to find another 1st year production example in .224 Weatherby in any condition.
