Israeli Military Industries (IMI) Uzi Model B 9mm Sub Machine Gun Class III NFA
Description: The Uzi is one of the most famous and well-known firearms in history and has been used all over the world by military, law enforcement, and others. Its popularity has led to its appearance in numerous films and video games and is easily one of the most recognized firearms in history. The Uzi was designed by Uziel Gal shortly after the 1948 Arab Israeli War and was adopted by the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) in 1951. The rest is history. As an interesting side note, the then Captain Gal (later Major) did not want the weapon to be named after him, but his request was ignored. The Uzi was most favored by special forces units and tank crews. Even today, the Uzi is still in use with special forces units around the world, particularly anti-terrorist units. Like most submachine guns (SMGs), the Uzi fires from an open bolt. This means the bolt is held to the rear when cocked, leaving the breech end of the SMG open. This serves the purpose of improving the cooling of the gun during periods of continuous fire. The downside is that this enables the easier ingress of dirt and other contaminants into the receiver. Cleaning must be performed relatively frequently, particularly in desert conditions. The other catch is that since the bolt must move forward, pick up a round from the magazine, and then move the cartridge into the breach to be fired, there is a slight delay between the trigger being pulled and the Uzi firing. However, the open bolt design also allows the Uzi to be mechanically simpler and lighter when compared to a closed bolt SMG like the MP5. The use of a telescoping bolt design kept the total length of the receiver to a minimum. In addition to this, it allowed for the barrel to be positioned further back in the receiver and for the magazine to be located inside the grip. These features are why the Uzi is much smaller and lighter compared to older SMGs such as the Thompson, MP40, and PPSh-41. Even in today’s world, the Uzi’s small size and light weight make it competitive with more modern SMGs. A top plate and fore end fitted with a picatinny rail for mounting a small optic and flashlight are all that is needed to bring the design up to date (although manual operation of the charging handle would have to be considered when designing a rail for the receiver, unless the charging handle is relocated to the side). This particular Uzi started life as an open-bolt, semi-auto-only gun and was converted after being imported by Action Arms Ltd. Naturally, it was converted to select-fire before 1986. It comes with two magazines: one 32-round and one 25-round mags. The Uzi itself is in very good condition. The non-reciprocating charging handle is easier to operate compared to a Thompson or Mac-clone. The magazine release is easy to operate. The bore remains in excellent condition with no rust or pitting whatsoever. It functions well in both semi-auto and full-auto modes. Converted Uzis will sometimes have issues depending upon the individual example; however, this one runs superbly. It must be remembered that select-fire guns require a higher level of maintenance than semi-auto-only types.
