Steyr Mannlicher Schonauer 1903 6.5x54 (6.5MS) Chas A. Heyer Safari rifle
Description: We have in our store a fantastic rifle, both in craftsmanship and appearance, function, and historical significance. This rifle is a Steyr Mannlicher Model 1903 chambered in 6.5x54 (6.5MS). The gun itself is in outstanding condition with minimal signs of wear. The gun does not have a serial number, and has one British proof stamp located on the bolt. However what is really fascinating about this gun is that t was a contract rifle for Chas A. Heyer & co. located in Kenya Africa; this fact is readily identifiable by the stamp on the receiver that reads "Chas A. Heyer & co. Nairobi". Therefore, this rifle would ha e spent its life in Africa doing what Steyr had built its romance and nostalgia upon, doing safari's. Chas A. Heyer was a German nationalist, born in 1870. Unfortunately little to nothing is known about his life before his business, and even then his personal life is shrouded in mystery. However around 1907 Heyer began his career in Africa in the gun business, and more specifically in the hunting and scientific expedition business. Soon Chas A. Heyer & co. would become a highly esteemed and reputable name in this industry, and would attract elite figures such as Theodore Rosevelt to acquire their services. Heyer built an elaborately diverse company in Africa, they not only provided gear and guide services for hunting etc., but they also provided gun rentals, on site gunsmithing, taxidermy, and much more. Heyer became very reputable for providing the best experience, and the best gear; the firearms he imported for rentals were of the most elite names, and all customized to suit his clientele. A key feature of seemingly all pf the rifles used by Chas A. Heyer & co. was that they were fixed with military style sights. This is because most of the hunters who employed their services were military men, specifically British military men; instead of giving each person a crash course lecture on the use of sporting sights, Heyer thought it more wise, and more safe, to simply have the rifles fixed with a sights these men would have already been well familiar with. Therefore a trade mark of the Chas A. Heyer rifles were their class, elegance, and their adornment with military sights. The Chas A. Heyer company did not have a long life although it did have a very impactful life. Heyer died in 1931, and was buried in Nairobi's forest road cemetery. Immediately after his death the company was taken over by former head of the taxidermy wing of Chas A. Heyer & co. Karl Fritz Paul Zimmermann. Shortly after his take over he changed the name of the company to his own - Zimmermann. This rifle, listed here, is a fine example of a Chas A. Heyer & co. rifle. It is a well known and elite brand, its condition and quality are unmatched, and it has the stereotypical essentials of a Heyer rifle, military sights, and a shell strap in the butt of the stock. This gun is a fine example of safari hunting in the early 20th century, being a gun which belonged to perhaps the most prestigious guide and outfitting company in all of Africa, and being in a cartridge which gained extraordinary popularity for elephant hunting, for it was a fast moving round with extreme penetration and could apparently peirce the skull of an elephant with ease. We are asking $3,500 for this gun and we do offer layaways.
