Stevens Tip-Up Schuetzen Rifle; 25-35 Stevens & Maynard; Half-Round/Octagon Barrel; Original Malcom Scope
Description: The Best and Most Complete Original Stevens Tip-Up Schuetzen-Style Target Rifle we have seen listed anywhere. This one has Matching Serial Number 16,8XX stamped on the Rear of the Bottom Tang and on the Left Side of the Breech (with the action open). The approximately 25 ¾ Inch Half-Round / Half-Octagon Barrel has a near-perfect mirror-bright bore with sharp rifling. This High-End Model has Well-Preserved and Nicely-Figured Wood on the Forend and Buttstock – which is capped off with a Two-Prong Schuetzen Buttplate. The Receiver, the Fancy (late model) Full-Loop Trigger-Guard and the Buttplate are Bright Nickel Plated. They show honest wear for age (over 120+ years) with some blemishes to the finish as seen in the photos. The Top Tang carries a Finely-Adjustable for Windage and Elevation Folding Ladder Sight with Pinhole-Dish Schuetzen-type Aperture. There is no front sight – as the front dovetail is occupied by the front (static) base for the Full-Length (approximately 30 Inches Long x ¾ Inch Diameter Steel Tube) Original Malcom Scope marked Syracuse, NY. The Original Rings/Adjustments are fully functional and the scope is in excellent optical condition with minimal to no foxing of the lenses, and a sharp, fine crosshair reticle. Power is not marked (not that we can find), and appears to be medium magnification in the 8 – 12X range or higher. Cartridge-Chambering Identification is based on a Cerrosafe Chamber Cast that strongly indicates this is a .32-35 Stevens & Maynard: smaller in length and base diameter than the 32-40 Winchester case, which will drop part way in, but not chamber fully. 25-35 was polular and common Stevens chambering in these target models during the late 19th Century. Buffalo Arms offers .25-35 cases formed from Starline 38-55 brass. We will update the listing if/when we locate cartridges or dies among the Estate inventory. The bright finish on both sides of the receiver is worn, most likely from grasping it there and hand-carrying; the most finish loss is on the bottom tang, also likely related to handling & shooting. All mechanical functions are intact – making this a most elegant, splendid, handy-sized and eminently shootable collector piece.
