STEVENS "LITTLE SCOUT" RARE RIFLE No. 14 MODEL .22 LONG RIFLE, MADE 1906-1910
Description: STEVENS "LITTLE SCOUT" RARE RIFLE No. 14 MODEL .22 LONG RIFLE. There were two variations in the Little Scout boys' rifles. The first was the Rifle No. 14 with one-piece stock and 18" barrel that was only made from 1906-1910. The second variation was the Rifle No. 14 1/2 which had a two-piece stock with 20" barrel that was made from 1911-1941. Obviously, the earlier Rifle No. 14 is the most difficult to find as it was made for such a short time. The Little Scout No. 14 was an inexpensive, yet good quality, single shot rifle intended for the boy's market. When these early rifles are found they are typically in much used and abused condition, being "loved to death" by their original young owners! The stocks on these were actually cut from boards or planks with rounded edges and a simple stamped steel crescent butt plate with simple steel trigger guards. Sights were a fixed rear that could be moved in the dovetail for windage. Front sights were simple blades. What looks like a sling swivel in the forend is actually a takedown screw so the barreled action can be lifted from the stock for easy packing or bicycle use. The action is a simple rolling block with extractor when the action is opened This is one of the better of these I've seen in either the early No. 14 or later No. 14 1/2. It is metal is uncleaned with good very aged blue and fine markings. The stock shows normal handling but is solid and not refinished or sanded. Action is crisp, safety half cock on the hammert holds fine and the bore is a bit dark with good rifling and normal light pitting, as one would expect. I'm sure this Stevens Little Scout made some boy extremely happy on a birthday or Christmas morning about 115 years ago!
