Antique J. STEVENS A&T Co Tip-Up RIFLE Made c 1888
Description: Antique J. STEVENS A&T Co Tip-Up RIFLE Made c 1888 Massachusetts Gun Maker Here we present an antique J. Stevens A&T Company Tip-Up Rifle in .22 Rimfire, manufactured between 1888 and 1895. Between 1838 and 1864, Joshua Stevens worked for other New England gun makers, including Samuel Colt, Eli Whitney, Cyrus Allen, Edwin Wesson, and the Mass. Arms Co. In 1864, Joshua Stevens started his own factory in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts at the age of 50 with 2 partners, James Taylor and W. B. Fay. With the factory starting at the end of the Civil War, many gun manufacturers went under due to the surplus of guns flooding in. But, J. Stevens became a world leader in the arms market until the early 1900’s. There are 16 models of the Stevens Tip-Up rifles, with Models 1 through 6 and 15-16, which were referred to as “Crack Shot” rifles, having no forearms. These well-made rifles were designed for hunting small game and for target purposes. There could hardly be a simpler rifle and action. This one features a half-octagonal, half-round, heavy bull barrel. The front sight gives the shooter the option of either a solitary fine blade or an even finer post and bead sight with a thin brass hood for precision shooting. The trigger is very light and crisp. The rifle balances well off-hand. The top of the barrel is marked “22 SHORT OR LONG RIFLE/J. STEVENS A&T CO./CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. S.A.PAT.SEPT.6.1864.” The overall condition is fine. The nickel finish is about 90% complete and the blue is about 80% complete. The markings are clear and legible. The bore is clean and well-rifled. The walnut stock is smooth and solid. The action on this rifle is excellent. Here is a fantastic single shot .22 rifle that has aged gracefully over the last 125 years and would still make a great shooter! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 26 inches. Caliber: .22 Short or Long Rifle Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
