US Model 1863 Springfield Rifle
with the 2nd Allin Conversion to Breech Loading.
Description:
US Model 1863 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE with the 2ND ALLIN CONVERSION
Nice M1863 Percussion Springfield with the 2nd Model Allin conversion by the Springfield Armory, for trap-door breach loading. Allin Conversations were conducted in 1869 and 1870. There were only 25,000 2nd Allen Conersions produced which may seem like a lot? But due to this being the primary rilfle issued during the 25 year "Indian Wars", a lot were lost or used up? May be interesting?: According the the Prime Video Streaming Service Documentery "The Great Indian Wars", this was the "rifle that won the west". Not the Winchester 73. If you haven't seen this series it is very educational and well done.
When acquired in 1974 it was represented and documented, to be an unaltered 1863 2nd Allen since the conversion was completed in 1870. With no visible “reconditioning” or machine cleaning / buffing since the conversion.
There is very little (to be expected) light surface cracking on the wood. Barrel has some staining on the metal but the patina is very reasonable for 161 years old. (1863 to 2024). Still retains significant arsenal black. Bore is very good to excellent. Includes bayonet.
The right-side lock plate is very clearly stamped “U. S. SPRINGFIELD” with a sharp eagle holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Clearly dated 1870 just behind the door hinge. It is also very clearly dated “1863”, just behind the rear hammer screw. Matching serial numbers on the barrel and chamber. Small “u” stamped on the right side of the middle barrel band. Small “u” on the front left side of the front barrel band Call for additional photos or explanations.
If you have a question or determine that that there is an error in any of the above that should be corrected or if a clarification that should be added? Please let me know. it is Important that this is correctly represented. Thanks.
Applies to all listings:
In 2002, the entire collection was professionally removed from wood and inspected for condition. Then cleaned, lubricated and reassembled. By a very experienced and professional Gunsmith. All received a clean bill of health from a condition stand point. Better than appropriate for the age.
They have only been lightly cleaned and oiled by me. Before and since. The entire collection has never out of a temperature-humidity, controlled environment. Since the purchased date. Most post 1920 guns have been fired by a qualified gunsmith or range master. For reliability, functionality and safety confirmation. I have fired a few. Limited to a total of <200 rounds.
Most guns that are equipped for them, have as-issued correct Bayonet and Scabbards, in very good condition. And most have (sure looks like) original: Slings, clips and if applicible, removable magazines. Rifles that support them have higher Mag loads, are available. All have the expected stampings and / or cartouches. Some Government Arsenal Reconditions are included. And if so? There are photos of the clear markings of this reconditioning. Again, per individual listing. Call for details. Other than Arsenal Rebuilds.
There are no known replacement or OEM parts or accessories in this collection.
All firearms are offered as collector’s items only. Seller does not accept responsibility as to the shooting safety or reliability of any firearm. A thorough inspection. should be conducted by an experienced, reliable gunsmith / rangemaster Before even considering firing any gun.
