U.S. Model 1868 Springfield trapdoor #86
Description:
Here for sale is serial number 86, U.S. Model 1868 trapdoor Springfield.
This rifle's breech block is stamped 1868, which is the year it was assembled at Springfield Armory.
There are currently just 24 such rifles known to've survived out of the estimated 150 rifles made in 1868 and that are so dated.
Only 15 or possibly 16 of those are in a private collection. None of those collections have more than One such rifle, Except for mine. I had Five and now have just Three left which I am selling.
1868's made in and dated 1868 are extremely rare.
One could live a lifetime and never see or have a chance to buy one.
There is no pitting of any kind on this rifle.
There are Four inspectors stamps on the left flat opposite the lock.
All metal furniture is smooth and National Armory Bright.
The bore is bright and the rifling sharp. No pits.
This rifle still has the early experimental rear sight.
I believe that this rifle was never issued or used in Serice. It's too nice. Maybe somebody took it home from Springfield Armory where they worked.
The sling does Not come with the rifle.
I'll accept a Personal Check or a USPS Money Order.
I will "Consider" accepting as "partial payment" an antique Winchester 1873 rifle in 44-40.
Packaging and Insurance and Shipping will be paid by me.
