The model 1873 “Trapdoor” Springfield was the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States Army. The rifle was named for its hinged breechblock, which resembles a trapdoor in operation. The Model 1873 was used by the United States Army throughout the Westwards expansion and Indian Wars. In 1884, a more refined version of the rifle was adopted as the Model 1884. This version was culmination of all the experimentation and modifications tried with the earlier pattern guns and had had a decade of field trials to draw upon. The primary upgrade for the M1884 rifle was the Buffington rear sight that allowed for precise adjustment for both windage and elevation. Here we have an interesting example of a Springfield 1884 Rifle converted to a carbine. This was a very common practice in the later years of the nineteenth century. Many people appreciated a smaller, handier and lighter firearm than that issued to the Army. This example was originally manufactured by Springfield Armory in 1886, it is serial number 307750. The gun has a 22" re-crowned barrel with 98% bluing, the bore is excellent showing strong rifling and a shiny finish. The breech block is blued and marked US / Model / 1884. The barrel is marked with V / P / Eagle, and P, and A in front of breech block. The SWP Stock cartouche is for Samuel W Porter with the final acceptance Circle P stamped at the wrist. “Circle-P” is a proof mark stamped into the stock after a higher-pressure proof round was fired at Springfield Arsenal in 1891. Overall, this carbine is in excellent condition with a stock that still shows a unit marking on its heel. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the carbine, whether it was a factory converted rifle or original carbine became extremely popular for people hunting big game. The carbine was an inexpensive and lightweight gun and powerful enough to handle anything in North America. Thanks for looking.
