SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR Antique SPRINGFIELD Model 1896 KRAG-JORGENSEN .30 ARMY With Soldier Research and Accoutrements!
Description: SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR Antique SPRINGFIELD Model 1896 KRAG-JORGENSEN .30 ARMY With Soldier Research and Accoutrements! Here we present an antique Springfield Model 1896 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle, made circa 1897 at the U.S. Springfield Armory, as well as Canteen & Research concerning Sgt. Clifford B. McMichael of the 2nd US Volunteer Infantry, H Company who was in service at the time of the Spanish-American War in Cuba. Documentation includes many (scores of) pages of archival copies of both typed and handwritten letters concerning pension and disability from McMichael (Globe, AZ), Senators Ralph H. Cameron and Clar Hayden of Arizona, and various officers, doctors, and US Army staff. It is clear that at this time the US government was hesitant and suspicious, to say the least, that McMichael’s claim of deafness was legitimate. One of the letters dated June 7, 1923 from Globe, Arizona M.D. W.W. Horst enumerates that McMichael was indeed completely deaf in his left ear for many years from an old trauma (an incident while on duty in Cuba), mostly deaf in his right ear due to a skull fracture from an automobile accident, and sustained grievous bodily injury during a cave-in at the mines (Dominion Copper) in which he worked in Arizona, relegating him to watchmen type duties at the mine for which we was ill equipped. The Model 1896 was the second Krag rifle produced for the U.S. The design was developed by Norwegian designers Ole Herman Johannes Krag and Erik Jorgensen. It was then adopted by Norway, Denmark and the United States, becoming the first general issue smokeless, small caliber (compared to the .45-70 GOVT), and repeating rifle in U.S. military history. Several features made this firearm desirable over others of the time. One of these was the integral magazine which could be loaded by simply dumping 5 cartridges into the hinged and spring-loaded box on the right side of the rifle. This made the rifle easy and quick to reload. The second feature was the magazine cutoff, catering to the prevailing philosophy of the day, which was to have riflemen fire and load single shots until the order was given to open up the magazine for rapid fire. This strategy would hold its ground up through the Great War. The most notable conflicts that the U.S. Krag would see were the Spanish-American War in Cuba and the Philippine-American War. Overall condition is fine. Original finish. The action is excellent. The bore is in fine condition: bright with sharp rifling. The stock is solid throughout with some handling evident. The inspector’s cartouche is faint but visible and the circle “P” is there behind the trigger guard. The canteen and satchel are in good condition for their age. Bayonet is near fine with a bright blade and clear markings. The canteen is marked with McMichael’s name and unit. The newspaper is The News and Critic from January 26, 1898 which talks about President McKinley sending the warship the USS Maine to Havana, which was one of the events preceding the Spanish-American War. A fantastic set! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30 inches. Caliber: 30-40 Krag (.30 ARMY) Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
