Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Carbine .45-70
Description: Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Carbine chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge, but sighted for the softer recoiling .45-55 Cavalry cartridge. The .45-55 cartridge is identical to the .45-70, but is loaded with less powder making it easier to shoot from horseback. The Model 1884 Carbine is identical to the Model 1877 Carbine with the addition of the new Buffington rear sight first introduced in 1883 and the simplification in production of the trap buttplate. The 1877 Carbine features a 22 inch barrel with the inclusion of a ramrod set stored in the buttstock. This was introduced after feed back from troopers complaining about the copper cased ammo used at the time sizing in the weapon and without any means of removal, rendered the carbine a nearly useless club in combat. This Model 1884 Carbine was produced at the Springfield Arsenal in 1886. It is all correct and in excellent condition for being a military surplus arm. The finish rates 85% with the most wear on the high point of the weapon and the lock. The action is smooth and the breach functions without any issues. The bore is bright with only one spot of wear inside the barrel near the muzzle. We believe this will not effect the accuracy at all if the next owner chooses to shoot this fine firearm. All of the inspector cartouches are sharp and visible with "SWP over 1886" on the left side of the wrist. This is a fine example of the last of the famous Trapdoor Carbines, the rifle that won the West. Safety note this rifle is not capable of shooting high pressure loads which now exist in the .45-70 cartridge. Only fire the original Government load from this antique firearm.
