Springfield M1 Garand, Nov. 1944 Rifle, Survivor, Excellent Original Condition
Description: This Springfield M1 Grand was sold by the CMP and shipped from the Anniston Arsenal on 9/30/1991. Some of the CMP paperwork is shown and will be provided along with the original cardboard shipping box (not shown). The component parts are documented on the M1 Data Sheet shown. The serial number dates the rifle to Nov. 1944 and the barrel is marked with a matching date: 1-S-A-11-44. The barrel has no chrome plating surrounding the gas port hole indicating it remains in WW2 configuration. The barrel has seen very little use as the Muzzle Wear measurement is only 1.0 and the wear or erosion in the chamber area, typically called Throat Erosion, measures only 2.5. Complemented with a bright bore is exactly what you want to see in a M1 Garand. The three pieces of wood are beautiful and all matching condition and color. There is the correct Ordnance wheel stamped on the bottom of the pistol grip and the P marked on the inside of the pistol grip. The SA / GAW & Ordnance wheel stamping on the left side of the stock is worn & faded but just visible. Over stamped are the letters O.G. a post war inspectors mark. These rifles were inspected for wear, if found repaired as necessary. If no wear was found, they were marked as inspected and passed on. This one likely went into stateside service somewhere until replaced with a “modern” rifle. It was likely released to the DCM in the late 1970’s or 1980’s. In addition to being in excellent condition the rifle has all its’ Springfield Armory original parts. In Nov. 1944 the Hammer Number being used was revision -7. This rifle has a revision -3. The parts bins were stocked as new revisions became available; no effort was made to use the “old” parts first. Having an earlier revision part in a rifle is perfectly normal. This is an excellent example of a first in last out random inventory system. This is an opportunity to obtain an outstanding M1 Garand that you know is historically correct and in excellent condition. Rifles like this are exceedingly rare and very collectable. .30-06.
