Springfield Model 1842 Musket with Bayonet
Description: The Springfield Model 1842 musket was the last US military smoothbore musket and the first one to be made with a percussion lock. All US military muskets up to that time utilized the flint lock design. The 1842 also the first US military firearm to be made with interchangeable machined parts, which sped up production and field repairs. The Model 1842 fired a round ball in .69 caliber and was fitted with a front sight but no rear sight. The barrel and hardware were made in the bright without bluing. Harpers Ferry Armory began production in 1843 followed by Springfield Armory in 1844. Approximately 275,000 were produced by the time the Model 1842 was replaced by the US Model 1855 rifle-musket. Following the adoption of the Model 1855, some quantity (less than 50,000) of the Model 1842's were rifled and fitted with rear sights. Many smooth bore Model 1842 muskets saw action during the Civil War being used by armies of both the North and the South. The musket shown here is a very nice example of an all original smooth bore .69 caliber Model 1842. It was made in 1847 at the Springfield Armory. The metal is in very good condition, showing some pitting around the nipple and on the left side plate, but otherwise very clean and in the bright. Markings on the lock plate include "Springfield 1847" and "US" under the American eagle. The left side of the barrel at the breach is stamped with the viewed and passed military approval mark "VP" over an eagle's head. The top of the butt plate is stamped "US". The bore is shiny and smooth with no rust or pitting. As can be seen in the pictures, the wood is in very good condition with no cracks, chips, or repairs. It has not been sanded or refinished. There is no inspector's cartouche mark, which, from what I understand, was not all that unusual on Model 1842 muskets. The triangular sprocket bayonet for the Model 1842 is original. It is in good condition, in the bright, with no rust or damage to the locking mechanism, blade, or tip. The locking mechanism works correctly. The bayonet is stamped "US". This musket is being sold as a collector's antique and should not be fired. FIring this fine firearm might not only damage it but potentially injure the shooter or bystanders. The seller of this rifle does not accept any responsibility for any injury or damage caused by the firing or misuse of this firearm. This musket is classified as an antique by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and, as such, can be shipped directly to the buyer's address. However, it is up to the buyer to make sure he/she is in compliance with any state and local restrictions or licensing. This is a long, heavy firearm, so add $90 for insured shipping within the continental United States and Alaska. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Antique: Yes |
