RARE US SPRINGFIELD ARMORY Model 1847 CAVALRY Musketoon .69 Carbine Antique 1 of only 336 RIFLED and SIGHTED
Description: RARE US SPRINGFIELD ARMORY Model 1847 CAVALRY Musketoon .69 Carbine Antique 1 of only 336 RIFLED and SIGHTED Here we present an antique Springfield Armory U.S. Model 1847 Percussion Cavalry Musketoon, manufactured circa 1853 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Muskets were designed for a dual purpose on the battlefield. They could be used as a ranged weapon, and they could also be used as a pike for short range fighting. Because they were used in a manner similar to a pike, muskets had to be long and heavy, which made them impractical for other uses. Because of this, many muskets were produced in a shorter version, often called a carbine or a musketoon, such as this example. These shorter weapons were often used by naval forces and cavalry as well as artillery. In 1859 two Model 1847 cavalry musketoons were modified at Springfield Arsenal by rifling the bores and adding long range rear sights. Additionally, the original production swivel ramrods were replaced with chain retained ramrods and an 8oz lead weight was installed in the butt to help reduce recoil. The sample carbines became the models for the modifications that were performed at Frankford Arsenal circa 1859, where 334 Model 1847 cavalry musketoons were also modified accordingly. 100 of these were later altered to the Merrill breechloading system, leaving only 236 Model 1847 rifled and sighted percussion cavalry carbines in inventory, including the two Springfield sample guns. Along with usage during the Indian Wars, these would have used by both combatants at the outbreak of the American Civil War. “1853” dated lock and barrel tang. There is a federal eagle in the center of the lock. The center barrel band, trigger guard, and butt plate tang has been marked with a “41”. “V”, “P”, eaglehead proof marks on the left side of the barrel. A tiny “GDM” collection stamp has been made at the toe of the butt stock. This rare Model 1847 Cavalry Musketoon belonged to George D. Moller and is featured in his published 3rd Volume of American Military Shoulder Arms on page 231, image 225.4-1. This one has been updated with rifling, Model 1858 rifle sight, a chain retainer on the ramrod, and an added lead weight under the butt plate. The overall condition is very good. Bright surfaces. Strong, tight action. Clean, reflective bore with clear rifling. Solid walnut stock with an expected amount of wear. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
