Springfield 1903A1 Special Target (National Match) Rifle, 30-06 Cal. RARE
Description: This Very Rare Springfield 1903 rifle was made in 1922 and has a barrel roll-stamped with "S A" above the Ordnance "Shell & Flame" insignia and the date ‘6-31’. Serial Number 12455xx. According to LTC William S. Brophy, in his book ‘The Springfield 1903 Rifles’, in 1931, the National Match (NM) rifle was a standard 1903 rifle that was reconditioned to National Match specifications for accuracy and use in Springfield Rifle Matches at Camp Perry and elsewhere. It doesn’t have the polished bolt with the serial number engraved in the top of the bolt, and it doesn’t have the ‘star-gauged’ on the muzzle of the barrel, either. Most of these rifles had the type C pistol grip stock, but this one comes with the oil-finished walnut ‘scan-grip’ stock with two recoil bolts, is fitted with the lower profile post WWI handguard, and it has all the markings of NM rifles: It has the last four digits of the rifle’s serial number incised and centered on the bottom of the stock, about 2 ½ inches from the butt plate, which is finely checkered as required of NM rifles. It has an ‘S’ sub-inspection mark stamped in the magazine cut-off recess, and it has an ‘N’ stamped on the bottom of the stock about an inch ahead of the bottom sling swivel. These rifles have the standard parkerized bolt with no serial number. The Parkerizing of this rifle is very good, throughout, except for the areas underneath its rear sight that appear to have been sanded out. The walnut stock has a few old nibs and scratches, but it has the patinated dark color that comes with age; a little over 90 years. The action on this rifle is crisp, and it has bright and shiny bore with very narrow and strong rifling. This 1903A1 comes with the standard M1907 leather sling with tight stitching, marked E.L.R., in excellent condition. According to LTC Brophy, in 1931 there were 1,958 Springfield 1903 rifles, like this one, reconditioned as 1903A1’s to meet National Match specifications. This rifle has the third configuration of reconditioned NM rifles. As such, these Special Target 1903A1 rifles were very few and are quite rare today. Photo # 10 is an extract of page 201 of Brophy's book, where he describes this Special Target 1903 rifle. We do not make TRADES, or accept OFFERS or LAYAWAYS on Items.
