This is a rather interesting example of a sporterized M1903. This rifle left the arsenal originally in 1929. Like most of its kind, after military service it was sporterized. Rather than cutting down the original stock or replacing it with an aftermarket pistol grip stock, this 1903 has the full length “C” pistol grip stock introduced on the later Model 1903A1. Interestingly, the original ’03 handguard was retained as opposed to replacing it with a later handguard design or dispensing with the handguard altogether. As is common among sporterized 1903s, the original straight bolt handle has been replaced with a bent one, and the original safety has been replaced by a Buehler safety to allow the rifle to be put on safe with a scope mounted on the rifle. The famous Redfield Widefield scope has been mounted. This featured a wide-oval shaped ocular lens (the lens closest to your eye) to allow for a better field of view. The original front and rear sights were removed to allow the scope to be mounted as close to the bore as possible. The front sight base is still present. The rifle was re-blued to give it a high luster appearance versus the old flat gray parkerized look. The bluing job has the appearance of one performed by a professional. Externally, the barrel has few small dots of micro-pitting, but these are minor. The bore is in overall good shape. There is a small, very shallow line of pitting near the muzzle end of the barrel, but not at the muzzle itself. It should have no effect on the rifle’s accuracy. Overall, the rifle is in very good shape.
