RARE US NAVY Springfield 1870 Rolling Block Rifle
Description: RARE US NAVY Springfield 1870 Rolling Block Rifle .50-70 GOVT Marked “USN/SPRINGFIELD/1870” Here we present an antique U.S. Navy Springfield Model 1870 Rolling Block Rifle, manufactured at the Springfield Armory circa 1870. This rifles employs the Remington Arms Company rolling block design and was manufactured under a royalty agreement with Remington, for use by the United States Navy as a shipboard small arm. Only 22,013 were produced, with the first shipment of 10,000 rejected by the Navy. This rifle would have been on ships like the Colorado, Alaska, Palos, Monocacy, and Benicia when they sailed for the United States Expedition to Korea in 1871. The lock is marked “EAGLE/USN/SPRINGFIELD/1870”. The side is also marked “P/H.B.R./ANCHOR”. The left rear of the butt stock is marked “LF/5”. The overall condition is near fine. The original blue finish is very well preserved. Case colors are muted. The markings are clear. The stock shows handling as expected and remains smooth and solid. The bore is bright with good rifling. The action is excellent, robust as ever. Here is a very nice example of the scarce 1870 Navy Rolling Block Rifle from Springfield! Own the original!
