Description: Classic Indian Wars Period Springfield 1873 Trapdoor Rifle Possible Indian Wars Regimental ID’D Over here for sale is a classic in US firearm primary weapons collecting. This is a very nice and presentable specimen of the classic Springfield Model 1873 “Trapdoor” .45-70 caliber rifle. Derived first from the original Civil War percussion Springfield muskets and then made as a standalone cartridge rifle, the trapdoor occupied a role in US military from the end of the Civil War all the way through to the close of the 19th century. This specimen, serial number 120262 is an early model 1873 which surely must have had been issued and used during the Indian Wars. The rifle as a 33 inch barrel, chambered for 45-70 cartridge. Overall the rifle although see use is very sound and usable for the black powder shooting enthusiast as well as a collector. The exterior of the metal is a peppery gray patina from oxidation and the lock plate is same although the markings of the American eagle plus Springfield stamping are very clear. Serial number is excellent. The bore is very fine and does not show any rust or pitting. The wood again is sound although there is a bruise as the lockplate meets the butt stock. Original ramrod is intact. Overall a great shooter, a great wall display piece and a very respectable collector’s piece. In addition, a cursory check in the US Ordnance records from Springfield Research may reveal the exact regiment this was issued to during the Indian War.
