Pre-Ban 1988 Norinco SKS Model D Rifle w/ Folding Spike Bayonet
* Accepts AK Magazines & All-Matching *
Description: This is a scarce Pre-Ban 1988-mfg. Norinco SKS "Model D" that is 100% original, matching, and in superb condition, imported by Beta Arms of L.A. California within the same year it was made. Beta Arms imported a total of only 6000 of these Model D's before they were banned. While the gun itself is marked only with "SKS" for the model name, these are actually called the "SKS Model D" by collectors, dealers, and Chinese weapons historians. These SKS Model D's are proportioned the same as the Chinese Military standard-issue SKS rifles, and look very much the same as they do, but they have been factory-converted by Norinco to accept any standard AK-47 type magazine in 7.62x39mm. These are considered by many SKS collectors to be one the finest of the modernized SKS model variants that has ever been made by Norinco, or any other manufacturer. Finding one of these for sale on the collector's market that is all-original, un-molested, and all-matching, while also still in excellent condition, both inside and out, is becoming increasingly harder by the year. As a result, this might be one of the best pre-ban gun investments still out there that hasn't skyrocketed out of reach for most people in price, like many of the pre-ban Chinese semi-auto AK's out there. In our opinion, it is just a matter of time before these Pre-ban "Ds" are way up there too. The Norinco SKS Model D takes everything good about the SKS design that is at-worst equal-to, or better-than, a standard model semi-automatic AK, like the superb reliability, the simplicity of the action, the better accuracy potential, the stronger and more durable milled-steel receiver shaped from a single block of solid steel, the more durable solid steel small parts, the ease of tool-less field-stripping and maintenance, the higher capacity to sustain damage or impacts and still work, the better and more ergonomic safety-selector / safety-lever design, and the more deadly integral full-length folding spike bayonet, and then improves upon it further by eliminating a couple of weak points and/or adding some new features as well. This modernization / refinement was designed and implemented by the engineers on-staff at Norinco, with the primary goals of the project being to improve and modernize the standard SKS for possible military use or military-contract sales to other nations, but also to increase the sales volume of the SKS in America and elsewhere, by offering an SKS variation that does NOT give-up anything to the various AK's being made not only by Norinco, but numerous other countries across the globe who were making semi-auto only AK's for the commercial / export market. The first step in creating an SKS Model D was swapping out the fixed 10-round magazine, which put the SKS at a major disadvantage in firepower, with a new re-designed magazine/triggerguard assembly that accepts any standard detachable AK-type box/drum magazine of any capacity being made. They had to reconfigure the shape and size of the stock opening designed for the standard fixed 10-round housing that was both too long and narrow, then reinforce that wider magazine opening with a steel liner to make up for the lost structural rigidity of less wood on either side of it. They then had to modify the receiver to create the clearance needed for the new detachable magazine design to fit, while still maintaining a strong and stable attachment-point for the receiver lug within the stock. The standard SKS sliding magazine latch on the trigger assembly was removed/modified to a AK-style paddle-type latch, designed to work with any normal AK detachable magazine. This was done by either removing the sliding latch altogether, and then welding on a new paddle latch and a steel blocking-plate over the now empty slot, or by modifying the sliding latch by adding a paddle-type catch at the far end of it, but leaving most of the original sliding latch in-place to cover the slot it rides in. Lastly, they removed the hold-open assembly in the receiver, and redesigned the folding spike bayonet's method of attachment to the rifle. In the original SKS design, the folding bayonet was secured to the underside of the rifle's barrel by way of a large screw that passed thru the smooth hole in one of the ears/tabs protruding downward from the sleeve-type mount on the barrel (that also has the front sight assembly on it), then it passed-thru an elongated hole in the tang of the bayonet, then screwed into the tab on the other side, which was threaded to match the screw. Once it was properly-fit and tested, one or both ends of the screw were staked in-place with a punch to prevent the removal of the bayonet, or the screw from backing-out over time. The NEW design eliminated the staked screw entirely, and was made to be removable without the need for any tools, despite looking nearly identical to the prior design. This was achieved by pinning the handle and spring onto the bayonet's tang, changing the elongated hole in the tang to an open hook, and replacing the screw with a smooth crossbar that ran between the same tabs, but was pressed into place This new design still folded or unfolded the same way as the older design, but gave the operator the ability to un-hook it from the crossbar and remove it entirely. The sum total of these modifications make the Model D capable of using any AK magazine from a 5-round flush-fit magazine to a 100-round drum, and every size magazine in-between, totally eliminating the firepower disadvantage of the standard SKS design. The longer barrel provided better accuracy and got more velocity out of the 7.62x39mm cartridge than a 16" inch AK barrel, while it also provided a longer sight radius which was easier to use and inherently more-accurate, the standard fixed-type SKS stock set was more natural-feeling, more stable, and more comfortable to fire than any sty;e AK stock set, the longer spike bayonet was more useful, efficient, stable, and deadly than the short detachable blade-style AK bayonet, and the heavier-duty / more durable milled-steel receiver and solid steel components supported and stabilized the barrel better, was capable of taking more impacts without damage, and the open-top design combined with the gas piston-powered action was exceptionally reliable, could go nearly as long as most AK's without cleaning or oiling, was better at shielding the hot gases and particulate matter expelled when it was fired AWAY from the shooter's face, and it's design was much better suited than the AK for the use of optics, given it's accuracy ceiling was much higher, AND, because there more locations and options to choose from where bases/mounts could be SOLIDLY and SECURELY be mounted on the rifle for a scope, should it need to be used for sniper/designated marksman duty. The standard AK was just not accurate enough to even be considered for this role, and the large dust cover and stamped steel construction greatly hindered where an optics base could even be mounted While Norinco would also later go-on to design a short-barreled/carbine-length SKS they called the "Model M" which also used AK magazines, these Model M SKS's would all be post-ban weapons (post-Chinese weapons ban), AND, they were made as a Model M from the beginning. The Norinco Model D's like this one, however, are a totally different "animal" so-to-speak in two major ways. The first is that all of the 1988 production guns like this one, and some of the early 1989 production guns are PRE-BAN in both regards, both pre-1989 Assault Weapons Ban, AND, Pre-1994 Assault Weapons / Chinese Weapons ban. The second major difference is that ALL Norinco SKS Model D's were standard-model or normal SKS rifles when they were originally manufactured/built. They were pulled out of storage in China or at Norinco, then they were sent back-thru the Norinco factory to be completely rebuilt/modified before they ever left China and were exported to the States 1988-1989. These modifications are most apparent when looking at the bottom of the rifle, where the steel block welded over the mag latch slot, the new steel mag-well lining, as well as the wooden or steel plate filling the void left by the removal of the old magazine housing, are all readily visible. In the picture section, there are pictures of all of these features on the rifle for sale here, as well as some pictures of the other methods of modification used on other rifles. All in all, this is a very cool, very scarce, and very clean and beautiful PRE-BAN Norinco SKS Model D rifle. No Norinco or general SKS collection is complete without one of these. It is 100% original, un-molested/modified, and all-matching Model D that is just as pretty and clean on the inside as it is on the exterior. Given the overall appearance of the rifle, it has likely been fired only a handful of times at the VERY most since new, and has obviously been well cared-for. It is a superb example in every respect, of what is also a very scarce Norinco SKS variation. We have no doubt that it will continue to be an excellent long-term investment, and as long as it remains in it's present condition, it's all but guaranteed to never be cheaper than it is today!
