1800s English Fowler TRADE GUN .63 PIONEER INDIAN Frontier SETTLER
Antique Smoothbore Musket with Painted Stock & Initials “JC”
Description: 1800s English Fowler TRADE GUN .63 PIONEER INDIAN Frontier SETTLER Antique Smoothbore Musket with Painted Stock & Initials “JC” Here we present an antique English Trade Gun made circa the early-1800s in London, England. According to Klisinger, “No gun in American history had such widespread use as the Northwest trade gun. This smooth bore, fowling piece, or single barrel shotgun was used more than all the Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Hawken rifles put together”. These were extremely useful as their smoothbores were versatile to use a large .63 caliber musket ball, shot, or a combination of both called buck and ball. For both subsistence hunting and defense against predators four-legged and two, there wasn’t a better tool. This smoothbore musket would have started out life as flintlock and was later converted to the percussion firing system. You will notice that the frizzen assembly was removed from the lock plate, the holes filled and filed flat, with a small bit of engraving added. The top of the barrel is marked “LONDON”. Birmingham proofs are on the left side of the barrel. Most apparent on this musket is the painting on the left side of the stock—on the flat and on the rear of the butt stock with the large initials “J+C” over an arrow—as well as on top along the wrist. Overall length is 63 7/8” with about a 48 ¼” barrel. The overall condition is very good. Original patina. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock has a short split from the muzzle to the first ramrod tube inside the ramrod channel that is stable. Blacksmith made iron ramrod with a worm hand-fashioned on the end. A piece that will make a fantastic historical display. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 48 inches. Caliber: .63 Overall condition as seen in photos.
