Sharps Model 1859 Rifle-Musket With 36 Inch Barrel
Description: This is a very scarce Sharps model 1859 Rifle-Musket fitted with the long 36 inch barrel with saber bayonet lug. Approximately 600 of these long barrelled "Rifle-Muskets" were manufactured by the Sharps Rifle Company circa 1860- early 1861 to fill an Egyptian contract. However, when Civil War flared up in April 1861 the Governor of Connecticut purchased the entire completed lot to arm newly formed Connecticut regiments. Therefore, these guns bear no federal inspction crtouches on the stock. This example is in exceptional condition. Although no original finish is visible all iron parts show a pleasing smooth grey-brown light aged patina, no rust pitting evident. All markings are fine as is the complete and fully functional pellet primer system. The rifled bore is very fine, clean and bright. Breech block lock up is very tight. Rifle has the unique 36" barrel long range rear sight leaf with the squared cut at top that fits over the sight mounting screw. Rifle also retains the saber bayonet lug under the barrel. The serial number on this gun is in the 36,000 range which is correct as these guns are serial numbered in the 36,000 to 37,000 range. Stocks are in fine condition showing their original dark oil finish and no damage, cracks or chips. The rifle comes with its very scarce and correct heavy Ames saber bayonet with original leather scabbard. It is serial numbered in the 37,000 range and bears the correct 1860 date and Ames markings. Blade is smooth semi bright in excellent condition. Leather brass mounted scabbard also excellent. The correct bayonet and scabbard for this rifle is actually a tougher find than the rifle itself. Overall this is an excellent example of a very scarce low production Civil War issued Sharps rifle. These guns were all issued to CT regiments early in 1861and saw a lot of use, fine condition examples such as this one are seldom seen these days on the collector's market, especially with the correct bayonet and scabbard. This would make a fine addition to your Sharps rifle or Civil War longarms collection.. SOLD Antique: Yes |
