We can’t put this carbine into historical perspective better than the legendary American antique arms historian and collector Norm Flayderman who wrote, “[a]mong the illustrious names in American firearms history is that of Christian Sharps, originator of a line of extremely practical, sturdy, long-lived and often quite handsome military and sporting rifles and handguns. Sharps arms are associated with several major historical events which shaped American history in the 19th century. The substantial quantities in which many of is models were made is testimony to their widespread popularity with both the military and the public during their period of manufacture and use. Undoubtedly the most widely used and popular cavalry weapon of the Civil War was the Sharps carbine. Certainly, one of the guns that most quickly comes to mind in considering the opening and expansion of the West following the Civil War, is the Sharps ‘Buffalo’ rifle.” Flayderman, Norm, Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms . . . and their values, 8th ed. (Krause Publications, 2001), 165 (emphasis added).
This particular gun is a New Model 1859 Carbine of the later type with iron furniture and patchbox. It is a .52 caliber percussion breechloader, a so-called “straight breech” model distinguishing it from earlier models, and includes the Sharps pellet priming system integral to the lockplate. According to Flayderman, approximately 30,000 of this type were manufactured. Flayderman, p. 170.
It is definitely a Civil War carbine as it bears the inspectors cartouches on the left side of the oil finished walnut stock at the wrist which prove its purchase by the U.S. Army and its use in the Civil War. Although Flayderman explains many of the Sharps Company ledger books are intact and privately owned, we checked with the current owner of those records to find out anything additional we could but are advised that no records for the New Model 1859s exist.
It has an excellent bore and is excellent mechanically.
