Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine Conversion .50/70
Description: Offered for sale is an antique Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine, made circa 1864, then converted to 50-70 Govt circa 1867 for use in the West by the federal government. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War. In 1867, the Ordnance Department contracted with the Sharps Rifle Company for conversion of over 31,000 Sharps percussion carbines to the .50-70 breech loading configuration. These carbines were issued to the regular cavalry regiments on the western frontier and remained in service until they were replaced by the Springfield Model 1873 Carbine. The carbine has a blued barrel with case hardened barrel band, receiver, loading lever and butt plate. The stock and forearm were originally oil-finished black walnut. However, this stock on this rifle was previously refinished. The carbine is fitted with the standard folding leaf rear sight The left side of the receiver two-line Sharps patent marks and the Lawrence and Sharps patent markings stamped on the right side of the receiver have been worn thin from cleaning, however close inspection shows them to be present. Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components.
