A Very Handsome Sharps-Borchardt Model 1878; built into a Mid-20th Century Custom Benchrest Varmint Target Rifle marked “.219 * IMP. * ZIP” (presumably an Ackley-Improved, Fire-Formed 219 Zipper Case) with an approximately 26-Inch Slightly Tapered Heavy Barrel and a Smooth (uncheckered) Glossy-Finished Pistol-Grip/ Cheekpiece/ High Monte-Carlo Comb Buttstock with a Finely Checkered Niedner Buttplate. The Forend is Flat-Bottomed and has a QD Sling Swivel Base, as does the Buttstock. Wood is Straight-Grained and in Excellent Condition. The barrel is custom (not original Sharps) and the entire rifle was polished and reblued – leaving none of the original factory markings except the serial number: 73XX on the receiver bottom, in front of the triggers. The muzzle is Flat+Crowned, and the bore appears excellent with no pitting or excess wear. It has sharp lands & grooves – as one would expect in a barrel from the modern smokeless powder/ non-corrosive primer days. There are Two Posa-Style 3/8” Dovetail Bases for Unertl, Lyman or other Standard Scope Mounts & Rings. Two pairs of old scope base holes (4 holes) with one pair/each in front and behind the present front base are filled with cut-off plug screws that show small patches of mild to moderate discoloration around them, likely related to the cut-off and polish work. All mechanical functions are tight and secure. The lever closes completely, so the approximately 1/4" gap between the lever and stock wrist appears due to the stock's configuration or dimensions.
