Extremely Rare, Identified CW Cavalry Soldier and His Sharps & Hankins Carbine
Description: SUPER SALE $2250 USE FREE N EZ LAYAWAY PLAN This was a direct Decendant Purchase. A wartime .52 caliber, Rimfire, Breechloading firearm designed by the brilliant Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Marked on left side of receiver Sharps Patent 1859, and Sharps & Hankins Philadelphia. on right side. Also crudely carved on right stock are the initials WS. after some intricate research and a lot of help from the National Archives we discover WS is Wakefield Standley. See Description Below. The Weapon: This rifle Presents as a very good original specimen of the design called the “Army” type carbine which was the brain child of the Brilliant Christian Sharps and was produced by Sharps & Hankins in Philadelphia, PA. It fired a No. 56 (.52 caliber) Sharps & Hankins metallic rimfire cartridge. By tripping the small finger release and operating the lever, the barrel slides forward to accommodate the cartridge. Stamping s are clear. Serial # 6641 is sharp and strongly stamped. Carbine exhibits tight and crisp mechanics. Bore is bright and clean with sharp rifling. A true wartime weapon. Add the aforementioned Private / Corporal Wortman and you have a very rare American Civil War Artifact in very good condition. Enlisted on 11/1/1863 at St Louis, MO as a 2nd Lieutenant. On 11/1/1863 he was commissioned into "G" Co.
