The percussion Sharps New Model 1859 was the first of the straight breech Sharps models. The Model 1859 rifle was used by the 1st and 2nd Regiments of the Berdan Sharpshooters during the Civil War. The 32"" round 52 caliber barrel of this rifle has a fine bore with firing erosion toward the chamber. All the metal has a smooth plum-brown patina. This rifle is adapted to the socket bayonet. The barrel has a stud front sight and Lawrence rear sight. It is marked SHARPS RIFLE over MANUFG. CO. over HARTFORD. CONN. forward of the rear sight and NEW MODEL 1859 near the breech. The left side of the receiver is marked C.SHARPS PAT, over SEPT. 12th 1848. The right side of the receiver is marked at the top R.S.LAWRENCE PAT. over APRIL 12th 1859 and at the bottom, C.SHARPS' PAT. over OCY. 5th 1852. It is equipped with two sling swivels and an iron patch box. The stocks are very good with old chips at the top left at the butt plate and at the top of the patch box door at the butt plate, no cracks, and light to moderate issue wear. The action functions correctly. This rifle would be a great fit for any Civil War collection.
